Horsley Hills

Little known as Andhra's Ooty is a 3000 odd high hill ideal for a quick weekend getaway. Horsley hills gets it name from the then Cuddapah collector W.D. Horsley. The place also has its share of folklore that talks about an old lady called mallamma who used to take care of a baby elephant which is when it was first christened as 'yenugu mallamma' hill (yenugu stands for elephant in telugu). Horsley hills is a quick summer getaway for those who can't spare more than a weekend. 160 km from Bangalore, 130 km from Tirupati, 180 km from Chennai approx. The best part about this place is that there is no private hotels, and thankfully up until now not much of commercialisation. There are rooms, cottages, and a couple of bungalows for stay run by A.P.Tourism. The resort/hotel also has activities planned for both families and corporates which came as a pleasant surprise. Some of the activities are trekking, rappelling, zorbing etc. Although these are quite small scale, they are

The Verdict

If you looked at the title and think I am going to give my point of view just like the other million self appointed critiques then I am sorry to disappoint you but what I went through today is a kin to the never-ending saga. My mornings are pretty much the same everyday. I get in to the cab groggy eyed either in gym clothes or something equally worse. My cab driver continues to go on a snake like path on the straight roads, and I am listening to MS's venkateshwara suprabhatam simply cause it sounds peaceful to me. Just watching everybody on the road going about their daily business, I suddenly see a teenager walking with a big orange flag with 'Om' symbols that he was lightly waving . Om by definition manifests aspects of God. Unfortunately, for me that scene was a manifestation of 'will break out anytime riot.' For a minute my body is still, my eyes searching for more clues, and my mind searching for dates of religious importance and lo, I realize the boy was proba

Arigato Gozaimasu!

On our first night out! "Konnichi wa! Which line to Shinjuku/Shibuya/Roppongi?" followed by an "Arigato gozaimasu" is how our days used to start in the land of rising sun. During the one week stay, it was something we pretty much mastered with the right intonation as an elderly Japanese man had complimented me! I usually take to new languages pretty easily but this time around it was the people that really inspired me to take to the language, place and its culture itself though I sheepishly admit that I haven't made a huge effort to understand the culture apart from some chito facts which is not such a bad start. I was going to start in a few days to Tokyo, and I had absolutely no excitement whatsoever. I was in fact way more excited about the royally delayed Christmas gifts we were going to get at work vs Tokyo. Ruchi "This is exactly when you are going to have a ton of fun; when you feel l

Hachiko week

monday morning events a few weeks back: I look haggard, my friends ask me if i didn't get enough sleep last night .. i lie first.. i say yes i didn't I am at my desk working and suddenly remember that it was probably Dudey's feeding time so i open up farmville. My heart skips a beat coz FV tells me Dudey has run away coz i didn't feed him on time, and i was unnecessarily upset. Farmville fans and my close friends will know exactly what i am talking about... back tracking a bit sunday night: i brave myself up to see yet another dog movie recommended by a fellow dog lover. I swore to god i am not watching a dog movie after 'Marley & me' but there is no way you can resist something like that... so the movie is reeling and my tear ducts draining.... i cry my way through the movie as was expected... and i go to work the next day looking like what i described. monday morning again: Friends ask "why the hell do you do this to yourself?" and i have no answ

Venerable Island

I’ve been wanting to go there for years now, thanks to the LTTE wipe out (for LTTE supporters, no offense but I am saying this purely in context of my plans for the trip) my Lanka dream was finally coming true. Tickets-check, bookings-check, numbers-check, shopping list-check … really bad co-passengers-was I supposed to check for this? I couldn’t wait to get off that Indian airlines flight not only because I was excited about Sri Lanka but because I wanted to be done with the smell of beer, sounds of my burping seatmate(I don’t know if that’s a word), and the sight of the same red-eyed seatmate staring at me. Nevertheless, I got off the flight and as friends, & fellow couchsurfers had briefed me the visa officials in Lanka actually smile at you and are friendly just like all the other people in the airport and the country itself. I headed straight to Kandy from the Colombo airport. I had a really sweet cab driver, Kumara, who could barely speak English be my tour guide while we d
